The joys of forum moderation

tiger-woods-forum

Alright, alright already with the Tiger Woods stuff.

But imagine you're the moderator of the forum on the Official Tiger Woods fan site right now. For years your message boards have been in autopilot, now this. Ouch - they get to sound off, and Tiger Woods gets to pay for the bandwidth.

Hey Tiger, not for nothing, but if you're reading this your blog really could use an update.

Oh, so could the "Ask Tiger Woods" section of your site

Google Maps hilarity

google_maps_10

You never really do know what you'll get when you ride around the country in an unmarked van taking pictures, do you.

It never fails that reality is so much funnier than fiction.

Check out this hilarious blog post from techblog and see some serious hilarity caught on camera by the Google mappers.

The Role Playing just might be my favorite unless Google actually went back in time and got some Renaissance Vikings or whatever the heck these guys are. Who knew that in medieval Pittsburgh, oh never mind I am sure these guys have heard enough. And I am sure the Star Wars Kid is probably available for counsel.

Then there's the house on fire and of course, the drunk dude.

Thanks for the funny, Google. I'll be sure to wave to you when I go outside.

Rocking Google Wave

I was really confused when I started with Google Wave, but suddenly after about two weeks, it all started to make sense. Now, I'm totally into it. Here's what I am learning.

Using wave starts out really confusing, but once you start to get into it, it kicks everloving a$$. Treat this like it is brand new, it's not Facebook, it's not Twitter, so forget everything you do on other sites, this is brand new so pretend you don't know anything. It's more like email, but real-time dynamic email with assets.

Use Chrome or Safari. If you're using IE or Firefox, download Google Gears

- but the UX (user experience) is much better in Safari or Chrome.

The The Complete Guide to Google Wave: How to Use Google Wave is the best training manual that makes sense, work through it at your leisure, I skipped around as I tried to do stuff and referred to it.

I "got it" with \/\/ave after watching the Pulp Fiction video.

If you're waving, find me: theresa.collington

Al Gore's gonna start acting crazy...

This is pretty funny. Al Gore was on SNL, and he's talking about taping toy guns to trees.

Augmented reality: What you need to know

Great primer here from Rocketboom via The Future Digital Live.

Perfect if you don't know what it is,  aren't sure what it is, or need to show people what it is.

Geeking out on this like I am?

Here are links to all of the incredible Augmented Reality mentions in the video:

Thomas P. Caudell coined the term Augmented Reality in 1992 while working at Boeing

Very funny, video of a shirtless Asian man dancing, showing his Neo Geo Collection

Nearest Tube iPhone app

Layar (Augmented Reality browser)

Bionic Eye iPhone app

Augmented Reality and Topps Baseball cards (You Tube demo), Topps website with live player AR baseball cards, holy cool

Smart Grid (my demo, ok to laugh)

Augmented Reality Subway App

TAT Augmented Reality  hello Big Brother. This is the face recognition that applies AR data that you set to your profile in real life.  Here's the mobile UI company Tat.se, and the facial recognition appilcations from PolarRose.com.

3D experience by Dassault Systems - augmented reality on a cereal box, perfect! Marker on the cereal box in front of the camera transforms the cereal box.

Hand From Above - hilarious, awesome AR billboard.

Augmented Reality Could be Coming to Your Contact Lens   (ooooh techno creepy goodness, if anyone needs a tester for these I volunteer)

Seriously, after watching this, Google Wave makes sense.

The South loves mac and cheese @ Thanksgiving

Tonight at dinner we were talking about mac and cheese, and how in the South it is part of the Thanksgiving spread.

Turns out - we were right, if you look at how people searched allrecipes.com and where the queries came from, the South surely digs its mac and cheese on turkey day.

Check out this sweet, luscious infoporn from the New York Times

Beautiful job here, nice color choices, great idea, great UX.

GM and ND suspended over Twitter fail

From Florida News Center - thanks Bobby D!

Sources tell Florida News Center that the digital billboard “snafu” from earlier this week, has caused quite a stir at Mobile’s WPMI. Newport Television, the owners of WPMI, have suspeneded General Manager Shea Grandquest and News Director Wes Finley for one week, without pay. The picture below has circulated the Internet, after being posted on Twitter by a driver in the Mobile area.

Found a lost dog - Blind Cocker Spaniel

This guy is too cute. Cocker Spaniel, almost fully blind in both eyes, found last night in Weedon Island area in St. Pete near Gandy and 4th.

No collar, no chip, recently groomed, super sweet, definitely someone's buddy, really likes our cat.

Please send this to all of your Saint Pete friends.

Roy and I are hanging on to him until we find the owner.

Someone is heartbroken I am sure.

How Google Wave is changing the news

Great article over at Mashable on how newsrooms are using Google Wave to get blips with their audience and host town square style conversations.

Hey JLo, Adam Lambert, what's up with the fake falls?

Seriously, are celebrities like Adam Lambert and JLo staging fake falls on purpose with the hopes of becoming web-lebrities?

At the AMA's - JLo took a tumble last night, but luckily landed on her butt.

Adam Lambert however, took the low road. He's a talented guy with enough buzz already and can get by on performance and pipes alone.

So did he have to do this? Really?

Really, when they do it on purpose to pander to the internet, I am over it.

Augmented reality - my mind blowing demo for you

This completely, totally blew my mind. You're not going to believe your eyes, so here's how I did it.

I went to the GE Augmented Reality site and printed out a piece of paper.

I held the paper up in front of the camera on my iMac and clicked on the Solar Energy launch.

Watch the video - the 3D scenes in my hand moved along the paper. Check out the sun.

Roy shot the screen with the camera on the iPhone. It took our breath away.

Augmented reality, I love you.

Most popular iphone apps?

Ok - Bingo Bonanza is a featured app/staff pick. But #2 on Apple's site for most popular iPhone apps is a Free Dictionary released on 11/16. After that - tic tac toe?

Not buying it. Anyone know where you can see in real-time what apps people are paying for?

Korea gets the iPhone next week, and China is going strong as of the first of November. Would like to know what apps they are able to see, and what the world buying.

If you know - shoot me a note at theresac (at) me (dot) com.

Tag Cloud ala Theresa Collington

Recently I attended the Leadership Academy at the Poynter Institute. It rocked. We went deep and wide into what makes us tick, and got the juice to go back to our jobs and be better leaders.

My coworkers and staff took time outta their busy days to fill out a few pages on what they think of me, and I used Wordle to turn their feedback into a tag cloud to keep me motivated.

Wordle: Theresa Colington

Interactive Map Porn - ooh baby

Ok there's not really porn here - but if you're into interactive maps, your significant other could become really suspicious of the time alone in the dark you spend with Wikimapia.

Go to map type and hit Google panoramio. Ohh yeah baby. Creepy and exciting at the same time.

So - why aren't news headlines showing up in this space? Anyone geotagging in their CMS yet? Should we discuss?

Augmented Reality: SekaiCamera debuts at LOEWE Store in Tokyo

Sekai Camera, the augmented reality iPhone app that tags and overlays information about products and places, debuted in Tokyo at a press event held at the Spanish luxury designer Loewe. Video shows how it works - point to an item and you get the info and the price. Wicked cool.
